WEYMOUTH 2

Baker 4, 57

HARRY Baker secured all three points for Weymouth with a well taken brace to seal the Terras’ sixth win in eight games in all competitions after a dramatic match away at Banbury United in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Mark Travers put in a superb performance as the home side came close on numerous occasions to denying the Terras the win while the Weymouth attack put in an assured display to seal the victory.

Weymouth made two changes with Calvin Brooks coming into the defence for his first start since returning from injury.

Mark Cooper was still suspended after being sent off against Chesham while Baker came in for James Hayter whose one month loan deal from Havant & Waterlooville expired on Thursday.

Aaron Rodriguez made the bench, having been recalled by the Terras from his loan spell at Dorchester this week, while Ashley Wells also made the bench as he returned to the squad following an injury sustained against Tiverton Town.

Weymouth took an early lead in the fourth minute as Ben Thomson worked well with Brooks down the right-hand side who pulled the ball back to Baker to fire in from six yards out.

Stephane Zubar was marshalling the defence well in the early stages as Banbury couldn’t make an impact.

Banbury’s Conor McDonagh put a ball up towards Tom Bradbury but Zubar stole a touch to ensure it went through to Travers.

Brandon Goodship had an opportunity to double the lead in the 14th minute as he found himself in space just outside the box but his shot went wide before he hit the side netting with a powerful left-footed shot four minutes later.

The Puritans were making their presence known in attack as Tom Winters crossed the ball into the box but Travers collected while under pressure from Ricky Johnson.

Banbury had a free-kick 25 yards out as Winters delivered the ball into the box which was cleared away by Abdulai Baggie before Charlie Horton then fired the ball back in, before it found its way through to Travers.

Goodship then put the ball into the Banbury box but it was put out of play by Luke Carnell with Thomson lurking.

A fantastic long pass from Charlie Davis then found Baggie, but the diminutive forward couldn’t trouble Banbury goalkeeper Jack Harding.

Banbury then had their own spell of pressure as Travers was called into action twice in short succession after McDonagh took a great shot with his first touch from just inside the box on the 34th minute, before the resulting corner from Winters forced Travers into action.

The attacking efforts from the Puritans told though as they equalised following a corner as a Winters shot was deflected off Baggie and past Travers meaning the two sides went in level at half-time.

Banbury started the second half on the front foot with a shot from McDonagh which Travers collected at the second attempt.

But the Terras took the lead again in the 57th minute as Baggie broke after a Banbury attack.

The former Poole man fed Thomson who crossed the ball across the box, evading the home defence, leaving Baker to tuck home at the back post.

Banbury responded when Leam Howards came on for McDonagh and he nearly made an immediate impact for the home side with a shot that forced Charlie Davis to clear off the line, which sparked a spell of pressure for the Terras to deal with.

Weymouth endured the spell and got back to attacking ways as Buckley passed the ball up to Thomson who got the ball to Baggie, allowing him to take a shot from the edge of the area which forced Harding into a good save.

Wells came on as a late substitution for the Terras as he made his return late into the match.

But Weymouth saw out the victory despite having to withstand a late barrage from the home side.

The Terras are next in action when they face Redditch United at the Bob Lucas Stadium next Saturday.
