Sunday sorrow for Terras

SUFFERING: Brendon King and Matt Groves SUFFERING: Brendon King and Matt Groves

EVESHAM UNITED 4

Wilding 41, Pugh 63, McPike 71, Palmer 75

WEYMOUTH 0

THE Terras’ woes on the road continued as they suffered a third successive defeat at St George’s Lane yesterday.

Following back-to-back defeats against Arlesey Town and Alfre-ton Town, Weymouth boss Bren-don King called for a response before kick-off but his men once again capitulated against a very average side.

Craig Wilding put Evesham United ahead on 41 minutes before Ben Pugh, James McPike and Marcus Palmer rubbed salt in the wounds after the break.

The Terras have now conceded 13 goals in their last three games and picked up just one point from their last four away trips.

King told Echosport: “After the game I questioned the lads on whether they have the heart and the desire, and I told them it is up to them now to put things right.

“It is the same group of players as we had a few weeks ago but there is no doubt that the results we have had recently have not been good enough. “I think a bit of complacency crept in after the wins over AFC Totton and St Albans, and sometimes that can happen with such a young squad.

“But what has upset me the most recently is the fact we have not had enough leaders out there taking responsibility.

“When things are going well and they are getting pats on the back everyone is happy but when things are not going so well no one is taking it upon themselves to make something happen in order to turn it around.

“We have got two tough away games coming up now at Oxford City and Stourbridge, and we desperately need a response otherwise we are in danger of becoming embroiled in another relegation scrap.”

King made two changes to his starting XI with Lewis Tasker and Richard Marshallsay replacing Ollie Tribe and Scott Dixon, who both dropped to the bench.

Byron Napper and Tasker lined up in the full-back slots while Marshall-say was stationed in the midfield.

The reason behind the changes was to add some much-needed steel but it failed to pay off on a blustery afternoon.

Visiting forward Warren Byerley had an early penalty appeal turned down but apart from that there was little to report in the first 25 minutes.

The Terras’ leading scorer then squandered a great chance by heading straight at keeper Daniel Platt from six yards and in the closing stages of the half that miss was punished.

Josh Quaynor delivered a free-kick into the box from the right and when Weymouth only half cleared, Craig Wilding was on hand to fire home from eight yards.

It was a poor goal to concede and to make matters worse King’s attempts to inspire his players at half-time fell on deaf ears as Evesham went on to add three more in the space of just 12 minutes.

Pugh doubled the advantage on 63 minutes after a mix-up between Ben Gerring and Sam Poole before McPike and Palmer both had all the time in the world to convert crosses from the right shortly afterwards.

On another day it might have been even worse for the Terras, who only had one attempt on target in the whole of the second period.
