JAKE Gosling was the architect of a giant-killing act the last time he played in an FA Cup tie at the Avenue, but the midfielder will be hoping for a very different outcome when he returns today.

The 21-year-old scored the winner for the Magpies when they memorably upset Ply-mouth Argyle in the first round two years ago.

Gosling is back in the county town with Bristol Rovers this afternoon (3pm) as they bid to see off Dorchester in the final qualifying round of this season’s competition.

A lot has changed for Gosling since his loan spell at the Avenue came to an end last January.

As well as joining Rovers from Exeter in the summer, Gosling is now an international footballer having made three appearances, and scored for, Gibraltar, his father’s country of birth.

He was in Gibraltar preparing for a Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia when he learnt that he would be going back to Dorchester.

Speaking to Echosport before today’s big game, Gosling said he couldn’t wait to return to the scene of that Plymouth triumph.

He said: “I’m looking forward to going back to a club where I had a good time.

“It will be nice to see the lads that were there when I was at the club, and I’m sure I’ll see some other familiar faces as well.

“I had a great experience at Dorchester, the players and fans were brilliant, and going there definitely improved me as a player.

“I went straight from youth team level to Conference South level, which was a big change.

“It helped me toughen up and improve my game because I was playing against men.”

He continued: “I imagine we will be favourites for this one but we won’t be taking Dorchester lightly.

“They have got some good players and are going to be very competitive, so we are going to try our best to make sure we aren’t on the end of an upset.

Reflecting on the Plymouth win, he added: “The Plymouth game was great and I think we thoroughly deserved to win.

“There was quite a big crowd there and it was a really enjoyable experience.

“Luckily for me, I was the one who scored the winning goal.

“It was a great touch by Mark Jermyn, he pulled the ball back and I put it in.”

That strike was Gosling’s only goal during his loan spell at Dorchester.

And when asked if he would celebrate should he score today, he said: “I couldn’t tell you. I’ve been discussing it with some of the other lads and they think you should celebrate.

“I will just have to deal with it if it happens.”
