BOSS Jason Matthews is eager to ensure his players take nothing for granted when they host bottom club Banbury United at the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

A total of 92 days will have passed since Weymouth last contested a league fixture at home, and the player-manager is relishing the prospect of exacting revenge on the Puritans, who conquered his charges in a 1-0 win when the sides met back in April.

“They are a tough side to play and we owe them one from last season,” the Terras’ chief told Echosport.

“They were in freefall and came down and beat us on our own patch. We owe them a little bit and I will reiterate to the lads not to take anything for granted.”

Banbury was where it all started for Matthews in the Weymouth hot seat almost a year ago, as a very different Terras’ outfit earned a 0-0 draw with the goalkeeper at the helm for the first time.

And Matthews believes that although he is still learning as a manager, his results this term speak for themselves.

“I think the proof is in the pudding on how far we have come,” he added.

“We have only had about three defeats in around 35 games this season. I asked to be judged on my team and I feel pretty justified in my decisions really.

“I have learnt quite a lot and it’s a learning curve every day. You aren’t going to get every decision right, it’s the nature of the beast really.”

Banbury currently sit at the foot of the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division with only one away victory in the league to date, coming against Dunstable Town in October.

But the Puritans did serve up an 11-1 drubbing against Wolverton Town in the Buckingham Charity Cup on Tuesday, and manager Paul Davis has urged his side to go on the attack at the Bob Lucas Stadium this weekend, something the Weymouth chief would be relatively pleased about.

Matthews said: “Hopefully it produces a good game for the fans, because we look to win every game and we don’t sit back, so it would be quite nice if a team did that.”

Full-back Ashley Wells will be forced to sit out the contest through suspension.
