PROUD Terras’ manager Jason Matthews was thrilled with his side’s performance during their 3-2 win over Biggleswade Town.

Following a 5-0 FA Trophy defeat at the hands of Havant & Waterlooville last time out, Weymouth hit back and produced a scintillating opening spell to rock the Waders from the start of their Evo-Stik Southern Premier League encounter.

And although his team conceded twice at the Bob Lucas Stadium, the Terras’ boss believes the overall scoreline flattered their visitors greatly, and his charges proved a point to those who had their doubts on the squad after the defeat to the Hawks.

“I thought we were outstanding and it was a massive reaction from the boys,” he told Echosport.

“One game at Havant doesn’t make us a bad side, some people are baying for blood and it makes me laugh.

“Biggleswade didn’t touch the ball for the first 20 minutes, we were soon 3-0 up and it was game over. We switched off once in the first half and the lad hit a great strike, to be fair.

“I thought we kept the ball well in the second half but didn’t put our chances away, they scored late on but it is not a fair reflection of the game.

“I wanted the lads to go out and play with confidence and they did, it just goes to show what we can do and what we are all about.”

The result puts Weymouth in sixth spot in the division at Christmas, three points off the pace and well-placed to overcome leaders Redditch United, having played seven fewer league fixtures. Title rivals Poole Town also succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Corby Town on Saturday.

Matthews added: “We are right in the melting pot with a lot of games in hand, working under budget, and I am really pleased.”
