DEFENDER Jamie Laird cannot wait for the Terras to travel to Dorchester Town on Boxing Day, in search of a league double over their bitter rivals.

The strong centre-half described scoring in his first clash between the two sides – a game which the Terras won 2-0 at the Bob Lucas Stadium – as his proudest moment in a Weymouth shirt so far.

And the 25-year-old is eager to help his side secure more bragging rights with a victory at the Avenue.

“It’s going to be a good one, with the form we are in we are really looking forward to it,” he told Echosport.

“Jason has been speaking to me about the crowd they are expecting and hopefully we can kick on from the last league derby we had against them as well.

“To score against Dorchester at home was brilliant, but my job isn’t to do that, I will leave it to Yettsy (Stewart Yetton) and the others. If I could get on the scoresheet again that would be good but the most important thing for me is that we get the win.

“We will pay Dorchester the greatest respect and they are at home so they are expected to put on a performance as well, it will be a tough match.”

Laird saluted the Weymouth fans for making the reverse fixture so special for him back in August, and he would like nothing more than to re-pay them over the festive period.

“We want to give the fans some Christmas joy and beat Dorchester,” he added.

“The fans have been brilliant all season home and away. I am expecting a good following away for the Dorchester game and hopefully we can give them something to cheer about as well.”

Laird also took the time to hail the ability of new signing Alec Fiddes, a teammate of his last season at Weston-super-Mare.

Commenting on the young winger, the Terras’ defender said: “He is another good lad, similar to Tristan (Plummer), he is a really nice lad off the pitch as well as being a good footballer. He is just what we need to come in and strengthen us.

“We need a decent squad and he is a brilliant player as well, I am really happy to have him on board.

“He is very similar to Sheps (Chris Shephard) in the way he is very positive and he retains the ball well. He is an honest lad and he will work up and down, he will do his best and give 100 per cent.”
