WINGER Alec Fiddes believes he made the right choice in switching from Weston-super-Mare to Weymouth and has full belief his new team can gain promotion this term.

The 20-year-old, who netted his first goal for the club on his inaugural league start against Arlesey Town last month, was disappointed that the Terras’ trip to Hungerford Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Bulpit Lane on Saturday.

“It would have been nice to have played to keep the momentum going and get a result,” he told Echosport.

But with confidence high in his new surroundings, Fiddes insists he has settled in well during his time at the Bob Lucas Stadium since penning a non-contract deal from the Seagulls.

He has once again linked up with former boss Craig Laird, and the youngster reckons he has not been part of an atmosphere quite like there is in the Weymouth camp at present.

He said: “I had a really good relationship with Craig and, as a young player, he helped me a lot and built my confidence up. I was playing quite a lot in the Conference South last year.

“When he left at the end of the year I decided to stay at Weston to carry on playing at the highest level possible.

“I knew Craig had gone down to Weymouth and I was hearing from lots of people that Weymouth was a club going in the right direction and they were looking to get promotion and maybe even get promotion again from the Conference South.”

Commenting on the move, he added: “It just got to a point where I was pretty convinced and I’d had it in my mind for a while that it was what I wanted to do.

“I honestly think it was such a good decision, from what I have seen in the first few weeks, I haven’t been part of a dressing room like it.

“Everyone is so close together and I think that is why we are getting so many results because the togetherness is amazing. It has been a really good first few weeks.

“I can definitely see that with the group of lads we have at Weymouth, we could even compete next season if we get into the Conference South.”

And in just a short spell as a Terras’ player, Fiddes, who is based in Bristol studying a degree in philosophy, has captured some memories he will never forget.

He added: “To get the 3-0 win in the derby, I couldn’t believe how many fans there were, the atmosphere was brilliant especially considering the weather. To get a result like that was fantastic.”

The youngster also has a continental connection which links to one of his former clubs in Lleida Esportiv.

“My mum is Spanish and I played out there for a League One team before I joined Weston,” he added.

“That was a great experience and half my family are Spanish, I go over there whenever I can.”
