TERRAS’ boss Jason Matthews admits his side are “there to be shot at” at the top of the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division, but he is confident they can handle the pressure.

With Hereford United’s record expunged from the league in midweek, Weymouth reached the summit without even kicking a ball as rivals Corby Town and Poole Town lost the points they picked up against the Bulls earlier in the campaign.

The Terras will lead the league going into their home clash with Cambridge City at the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

Weymouth are unbeaten in their last 12 league outings, a record which dates back to September last year, and Matthews, pictured, is immensely proud of his side’s current form, but insists his charges will keep their feet on the ground.

He told Echosport: “We have put ourselves up there after what is an unbelievable run.

“We are up there to be shot at but we will not get too big time and carried away. I have a level-headed bunch of lads and we will stay that way.

“When you start getting cocky and you’re there to be shot at, teams do that little bit more to try and beat you.

“All the top teams are winning at the moment and it’s important we keep our run going and not worry about anyone else.

“We want to stay unbeaten for as long as we can and that will put pressure on the other sides.”

A solitary Stewart Yetton strike proved the difference when the Terras met City at the end of August.

And although Matthews admits he thought the Lilywhites would be better placed in the division, he will not be taking Gary Roberts’ men, who currently occupy 13th spot, for granted.

“They are not having a good season by their own high standards but they are not out of the play-off running,” he added when commenting on tomorrow’s opposition.

“We treat every game the same, whether it’s against a team at the top or the bottom. Gary Roberts is a brilliant manager and he has done extremely well at this level for a long time, and you underestimate Cambridge at your peril.

“I went and watched them just before Christmas at Paulton Rovers and their side has changed a little bit. They have a few injuries but I know what their strengths are.”

Weymouth midfielder Luke Winsper has received an injection in his foot but it will be touch-and-go as to whether he will return to the squad.

Sam Poole is ruled out with a broken nose, but the Terras’ player-manager isn’t ruling out adding to his ranks before kick-off.

Speaking about his attempts to add fresh faces, he said: “We have been really trying but we won’t just sign people for the sake of signing them.

“The squad has done so well so far and it has to be the right person to come in. We have a lot of attacking options, we are a bit light defensively, but Jake Wannell is still available for Saturday.

“We have done so well with our current squad over the last three games so I won’t be rushed.”
