JAKE Wannell claimed his time with the Terras was “unfinished business” and did not rule out a return to the club after he played his final game against Cambridge City on Saturday.

Wannell was set to head to London yesterday before jetting off to Australia, where he will eventually join up with a club down under after doing some travelling.

But before the former Exeter City full-back departed the UK, he exclusively spoke to Echosport about his time with at Weymouth.

“It has been brilliant, I never thought I would enjoy my football as much as I did when I moved here,” he said.

“Jason (Matthews) has put a lot of faith in me which I can’t thank him enough for, and all the players have welcomed me with open arms. Hopefully one day I can come back, it’s definitely unfinished business.

“The standard of football at Weymouth shocked me to be fair, I thought I would come out of pro football and it would be completely different but it has really surprised me.

Commenting on his team-mates, the 20-year-old added: “I knew Chris Shephard and Adam Kelly before but they really welcomed me and made it a lot easier.

“I had heard lots about Stewart Yetton but I never knew him and he took me under his wing a little bit, and I can’t thank him enough.

“I have never been in a changing room like it, everyone bounces off each other, we are all good mates on and off the pitch and I didn’t really feel that at any other clubs.”

Wannell almost capped his final performance with a goal, but he squandered two good opportunities in his final game against the Lilywhites.

“They fell to the wrong man I think. I left my shooting boots at home, it would have been perfect,” he added.

Commenting on the left-back and possible replacement, boss Jason Matthews added: “He (Wannell) has been a magnificent asset and we wish him all the best, we will miss Jake.

“I would like to sign another left-back and I’m very confident that there will be bodies in this week.

“It has been a couple of frustrating weeks on the phone but I feel I have the right people in mind now and that’s a good thing.”
