MIDFIELD ace George Rigg believes the perfect way to welcome Jason Matthews back into the Weymouth starting XI is by capturing three points at Banbury United this afternoon.

The Terras’ boss revealed to Echosport he was confident of being fit enough to reclaim his place in goal against the Puritans, and 21-year-old Rigg is confident of victory in the player-manager’s comeback game.

“Training has been good and we have been working hard on our shape. The boys have been lively,” he told Echosport.

“Jase trained on Thursday and looked sharp. It will help the boys having his experience back on the pitch and it would be nice to repay him.

“He is a top manager and has been brilliant with us this season, he has confidence in us all and I am sure we will come through and secure our play-off place for him.

“It has been a great first full year for Jase, we just need to work hard and secure that place as a team.”

With Weymouth favourite Trevor Challis coming into the Terras’ backroom staff, former Bristol City youngster Rigg welcomes a familiar face.

“I have known Trev since I was about 13-years-old,” he added.

“He hasn’t really managed me, but he was around the club doing other age groups.

“He obviously has bags of experience and I think he’s a great addition to the management team.

“He knows what it takes to do well and it is really good for the club to have him.”

And with Challis in the dugout, Rigg knows that none of the Terras’ players will be taking struggling Banbury lightly.

He added: “Any game towards the end of the season is massive and anything can happen.

“We are not going to go out there thinking it will be easy because it won’t be.

“If we battle and work hard our quality will shine through.

“We played quite well against Truro, it just didn’t go our way. There were positives to take from it and we can build from there.”
