TREVOR Challis admits he has “thoroughly enjoyed” being back at Weymouth in an advisory role alongside good friend Jason Matthews.

The former QPR defender, who helped the Terras to the Conference South title as a player, was drafted in by Matthews to become part of his staff earlier this month.

And he believes if the squad can creep into the top five at Biggleswade Town today (3pm), the Terras have a great chance in the play-offs.

Speaking about his return, the current Bristol City under-16s’ manager told Echosport: “With my games programme finishing it just ticked the box at the right time and Jason needed help, so I jumped at the chance to come and work with him.

“A lot has changed but there have still been some old faces which have been great to see again and catch up with, and obviously there are a lot of new ones as well.

“Trying to get across my thoughts and philosophies, especially with the defending side of things, I have really enjoyed.

“If we can get a result and the other results go right, there is no reason why the momentum can’t be with Weymouth going into the play-offs.”

Commenting further on manager Matthews, Challis added: “He is a very good networker and a very good watcher of games so I always believed he would do well on that side of things.

“He is very good at speaking to people and his network of contacts is second to none.

“The coaching side of it I think he will improve in time, he obviously had Lairdy (Craig Laird) working with him so he was very good.

“I think whoever does it next season will have a massive role to play because Jase’s man management skills are excellent.”

The Terras’ favourite also commented on his situation next season with Bristol City.

“It’s my full-time role and my games programme is on a Saturday so that pretty much rules out anything long-term, as it stands, with working on Saturdays with Weymouth,” he added.
