WEYMOUTH have announced the launch of a new fundraising team to help boost the club’s coffers, with events planned throughout the year.

The team, headed up by Terras fans, is aiming to inject further revenue into the club, primarily to go into the playing budget for next season.

Chairman Chris Pugsley told Echosport: “These are people who have been supporting the club for years and want to get more heavily involved to generate money to go into the players’ funds.”

A spokesperson for the group added: “When you look at the bingo nights that Brian (Walbrin) and Merv (Sharp) started up a couple of years ago, the first night they probably raised £50.

“They are now making around £600 and there needs to be multiples of that.

“If you get two or three multiples of that running each month it makes a huge difference to the coffers of the club.

“At the same time, if anybody wants to come and help us, more bodies are better to help with any job around the club.”

One project already launched is the chance for businesses and supporters to purchase a 125th year anniversary board, including their own logo or name, to go on a fans' wall inside the Bob Lucas Stadium for £125. For more information, contact the club on 785558.

The team is also arranging a comedy night at the Weymouth Centenary Club for Friday, June 12, featuring comedian Jimmy Quinn and music from Stacey Lou.

Tickets, priced at £10, are available from both the football club and the Centenary Club.

There will also be a club golf day on Friday, July 3 to be held at Weymouth Golf Club.

Teams of four will receive a bacon roll and hot drink on arrival, 18 holes of golf, and a two-course evening meal for £60 per person.

An evening meal can still also be arranged for non-golfers at £20 per person.

Donations of prizes for the golf day are welcomed and visit weymouthfcgolfday.co.uk to enter a team.

The fundraising team is looking to organise a crossbar challenge and golden goal draw during home games next season, as well as events such as a grand Christmas draw and a sportsman's dinner.

Pugsley added: “We do need volunteers and, if anyone wants to come in with any ideas to raise money for the club, we can assure them that the money raised will go straight into the players’ budget if that’s where they want it to go.”
