BOSS Jason Matthews has swooped to add no fewer than three players to his Weymouth squad on non-contract terms for next season, including the re-capture of defender Jake Wannell.

Former Poole Town midfielder Billy Lowes and ex-Frome defender Mark Cooper have also been announced as new signings.

Wannell, who helped the Terras go top of the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division while part of the set-up last term, claimed his time with the Terras was “unfinished business” when he spoke to Echosport in January before heading to Australia.

On his return, manager Matthews told Echosport: “I am absolutely delighted that he has decided to re-sign.

“He has come back from his trip around the world and is buzzing to get back playing football.

“He has set himself a few high targets next year and it will be nice to have him back around the camp again. He is a really good lad on and off the pitch and I see him as a really big asset to us for next season.”

Speaking about prospect Lowes, voted the Dolphins’ young player of the year for 2013/2014, Matthews said: “Billy is someone that I looked at a couple of times when he went on loan to Totton and he impressed me.

“He is a big, strong midfielder and he will add competition for places.

“He is young and very hungry and he wants a chance. He doesn’t feel like he had a fair chance at Poole so he has a point to prove.

“He ticked a lot of boxes for us and we are delighted to have him on board.”

Completing the trio of fresh recruits, the Weymouth chief believes full-back Cooper, who featured against the Terras as a Frome player back in March, is also someone who can have a big impact.

The Terras’ boss also revealed that he tried to bring Cooper to the Bob Lucas Stadium last season.

“He can play at right or left-back and doesn’t really have a weaker foot," Matthews claimed.

“He won a lot of awards at Frome last year and is another one that is really hungry to do well.

“I have watched him probably eight times over the last two years and he was someone I looked to bring in last season.”
