TIM Sills believes that the Terras’ coaching staff have gained valuable information from staging their 125th Anniversary Tournament.

The event, eventually won by a Torquay United XI while Weymouth recorded a win, loss and draw, gave the club the opportunity to have a look at a number of different options and personnel in preparation for the new season.

Assistant-manager Sills told Echosport: “To do something so different with different styles of play to play against, you can give people different runs and it was beneficial and interesting to us.

“There are still things we need to work on and it is quite apt that we were playing on a bit of a sticky pitch which is dry, because that’s going to be the case at the start of the season. Things like our final ball and first touch will be helped by that.

“The work-rate and desire is already there and that’s something we need to make sure stays. It’s just that little bit of quality we need to work on now and that’s what you need in pre-season because everyone comes back a bit rusty.

“So far, the application and the commitment from the boys has been first-class and hopefully we can take that into the season.”

Weymouth observed a handful of trialists during the event, including youngster Matt Buse, who has an established profile in futsal, having featured for Bristol City in the FA National League.

“He wants to play with a weighted ball and things like that but we can’t let him do that!” Sills added.

“It is tough in these games, especially when it’s only 15 minutes each way, but Matt has been on trial and he has been steady again.

“He has obviously got some quality and that’s why we are having a good looking at him.”

Sills also took the time to thank all the competing teams in the event.
