WEYMOUTH assistant-manager Tim Sills believes he has transitioned well into his new role with the club, as preparations for the campaign gather pace.

Having made the step to become manager Jason Matthews’ number two this term, the experienced frontman, additionally remaining as a member of the playing staff, has also been tasked with running training sessions throughout the club’s pre-season.

And while the challenge has been different to what the 35-year-old is used to, he believes he is settling into the position well.

“So far it’s enjoyable, it’s something very different for me but it’s a bit of responsibility that I enjoy,” he told Echosport.

“It is a bit different as I haven’t really led sessions in their entirety before.

“But the boys say they are enjoying it and I said when I took the job that it was easier for me because I knew them before, that’s definitely proved to be the case.

“Jase is very easy to work with which makes it very enjoyable. With the other backroom staff of Paul Maitland putting so much effort in, Micky Greeno there to always cheer people up and things and Dave Tune, the kit man, who never lets us down, it is an easier role to drop into for me.

“I am very blessed that I have that opportunity now and it is so far so good.”

Speaking about his sessions, the former Torquay striker added: “I have gone in with the mentality that I didn’t want to put on any running that I myself as a player would hate.

“That, for me, has always been slightly more pointless. You can do all the running in the world but you’ll never be fit to play on a football pitch unless you have actually played matches or similar games in training.

“We have tried to keep our fitness tailored to that, a lot of it has been done with a ball and, to be fair, a lot of the boys came back in really good shape anyway.”

  • Meanwhile, Weymouth's scheduled pre-season clash against Taunton Town last night was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The Terras will now host Hamworthy United on Thursday (7.45pm).
