THE new league campaign may only be a matter of days old, but Jason Matthews has been doing all he can to assess this year’s competition.

Either side of his team’s 4-1 triumph over Paulton Rovers on Tuesday, the Weymouth chief took in Hungerford’s goalless stalemate with Poole and Frome’s 1-1 draw with league new boys Merthyr.

“It’s been beneficial,” he told Echosport.

“I have been able to look at Hungerford and Poole, who I feel will both be up there, as well as Merthyr. Frome are always tough to beat on their own patch as well, as they proved on Wednesday.

“It’s good to look around and I feel that some teams have really improved this year. It should be interesting.”

The next test for Matthews’ troops comes tomorrow when they host Dunstable Town (3pm), who have lost their opening two league games against Histon and Chippenham.

Chris McPhee is set to return to the Weymouth squad but is unlikely to be fit to start, while George Rigg will need assessing further after picking up a back injury in midweek.

“We are just waiting on some results,” said the Terras boss about former Bristol City man Rigg.

“He is having treatment and I am hoping he is fit because he is playing really well. The whole of the midfield on Tuesday was superb.”

Striker Josh Grant has been ineligible for Weymouth’s first two league outings and is still awaiting international clearance for tomorrow’s clash.

Speaking about the Duns, Matthews added: “They will be desperate to get their first points on the board.

“I have heard they were very unlucky against Chippenham and the margins are fine in this league.

“They have signed Paul Bastock in goal and I don’t think many of his sides ever fail to make the play-offs, so we are expecting a really tough game.”

Meanwhile, in a change of scheduling, Weymouth’s clash with Bideford next Tuesday will now take place at the Bob Lucas Stadium (7.45pm).
