JASON Matthews believes the added experience in his squad this term will serve the Terras well as they bid to avoid a repeat of what happened during the second half of last season.

Unbeaten in six Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division fixtures, Weymouth are, like they were 12 months ago, moving into a promising position in their push for promotion.

Player-manager Matthews is desperate to right the wrongs of last term when his team “couldn’t buy a win” after the turn of the year following a positive start to the campaign.

And with the likes of Pat Baldwin and Mark Molesley now in his ranks, Matthews reckons the Terras have that extra nous in the squad to stand them in good stead going forward.

“I learnt a lot in the second half of last season when we couldn’t buy a win and I want to put that right,” he told Echosport.

“I still want us to try and play football but also be a bit more compact.

“We can play different systems away from home and we’ve got the personnel to mix it up.

“I do my homework a lot better and I’ve made some good contacts to get reports from.

“The lads have gelled fairly well and we’ve probably got a bit more experience in the squad this time around, which makes a big difference.

“Mark Molesley and Pat Baldwin are big names to have at the club and they talk to the other lads a lot which can only help us.”

Weymouth, fourth in the table, travel to Redditch United tomorrow (3pm) just two points off leaders Poole Town.

Matthews added: “Redditch lost 3-0 at Chesham on Tuesday but are a tough side at home.

“But we’re on a bit of a run at the moment and have been putting some results together.

“We’ve been conceding very few goals and playing some nice stuff as well.

“We’ve got a lot of competition for places and it’s good that when you get an injury or suspension you can cover it.

“And that’s something we didn’t quite have last year.”

Adam Kelly misses the game due to a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, goals from Matt West, Billy Mitchell and Jack Will gave Weymouth Under-18s a 3-1 win over their Dorchester counterparts in the Gary Else Cup.
