TERRAS’ goalkeeping coach Paul Maitland has explained further the club’s decision to bring in AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Jordan Holmes in place of injured boss Jason Matthews on Saturday.

The Australian youth international took his place in the Weymouth goal for the 2-1 league defeat at Dunstable Town while numbertwo stopper Steve Boore, who has played in the Red Insure Cup and briefly in the FA Trophy for the first-team this season, featured for the Terras’ reserves.

Some fans have called for ex-Yeovil Town man Boore to be given an opportunity in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division and Maitland has responded to their claims.

He told Echosport: “Jordan Holmes is at a Premier League football club, he is an international goalkeeper.

“It’s not like we have gone to Bridport and said 'can we borrow Ashley Weeks for two weeks?’. We haven’t done that, we have gone to a Premier League club to borrow a goalkeeper that trains day in and day out at Bournemouth.

“We are trying to nurture Steve in the right way and the right way is to gradually integrate Steve into the first-team rather than rush him. I have had conversations with him and I have spoken to him about it.

“He just has to remain patient and I urge people to have a little bit of faith in those that work with him all the time.”

Boore arrived permanently at the Bob Lucas Stadium after working with Maitland as a Chickerell player last season.

Maitland added: “Steve is nearly there, he is just not quite there. He just needs to be patient, which is what we have said to him.

“He has worked really hard and Jase and I are both over the moon with him.

“We didn’t really expect him to do what he has done so far, he has exceeded our expectations and has come on really well. His shot-stopping was never in question from when he arrived and his distribution has got much better.

“He has done that with help from us and I am a little hurt that people aren’t prepared to trust and believe that we are doing the right things for the right reasons for Steve.

“He has to keep plugging away and work hard and it will happen for him when he is ready.”
