DEFENDER Ashley Wells believes Weymouth’s current squad provides the best team he has ever played in.

The popular Terras’ full-back, who has regained his place in player-manager Jason Matthews’ starting XI in recent weeks, also insists the depth in the Weymouth ranks will stand them in good stead come the business end of the campaign.

Wells, who came into the team in place of then injured Jake Wannell for the FA Trophy tie at Winchester City last month, admits that while he was frustrated by being left on the bench during the early part of the season, he understood the coaching staff’s decision not to tinker with a resolute back four.

He told Echosport: “I had to bide my time to get back into the team because the lads were going well and our defensive record speaks for itself. You aren’t going to change a team which isn’t conceding goals but I have been patient.

“I was just happy the team was winning and I was still a part of it. Even when you are not playing, obviously it’s frustrating, but you still want the team to win.

“Jase always has a policy which is if you do well you keep your place, which is a good thing to go by.

“If you get the shirt you have earned it and there is always someone breathing down your neck that can come in for you. It keeps you on your toes and raises everyone’s game.”

Wells has a suspension looming for when the Terras face Stratford Town a week on Saturday and realises he could be in danger of forfeiting his place once again.

The former Portland United man believes there is always an abundance of quality players ready to step in.

He added: “The big thing is that it’s a squad game. We have one of the best squads I have seen in the league if not the league above.

“It is probably the best team that I have ever played with.

“We will go about our business week in week out and at the business end of the season we will see where we are. I guarantee we will be up there.”
