EXPERIENCED midfielder Mark Molesley is eyeing a big 2016 for him and his team-mates as the Terras attempt to stage a concerted promotion push.

Molesley, who arrived at the Bob Lucas Stadium last summer, hopes the new year brings with it greater consistency all round.

Injury and suspension saw the former Bournemouth man’s Weymouth career get off to a stuttering start, leaving the 34-year-old frustrated after stepping down from full-time football.

And while he is now beginning to enjoy a steady run of games in Jason Matthews’ side, Molesley is keen to deliver more consistent performances, both individually and as part of the Terras.

“It has been a bit stop-start for me so far,” he said. “I damaged knee ligaments in pre-season and it took me a bit of time to come back from that.

“When I did I unfortunately picked up a suspension, but I’m just hoping to stay fit now and get a run of games.

“Hopefully 2016 will be a better year for me.”

Weymouth, who host Hitchin Town today (3pm), are just a point outside the play-off places in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Player-boss Matthews told Echosport earlier this week about how the camp is going all out to avoid the drop off in form which occurred at the same stage last season.

And Molesley agrees with his manager’s view that Weymouth must start turning draws into victories.

“I definitely think the potential is there in the squad,” added Molesley. “We’ve got a great set of lads and a really good team spirit, but we need to start turning draws into wins.

“The Dorchester game was very disappointing, especially after doing so well against Slough.

“We can definitely go up, we just need to be more consistent.

“We are a few points adrift of Poole at the moment but it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and there is still half the season to go.

“We’ve got games in hand and we need to make them count.

“If we play at our best I would back us against anyone.”

Meanwhile, there was some sad news yesterday as it was announced that former player John Carroll had passed away at the age of 57.

The centre-back represented the club in the mid-1980s before returning to his native Liverpool to play for Runcorn.
