PLAYER-MANAGER Jason Matthews was more than happy with Weymouth’s accomplished performance in a 2-0 win at Bideford, which extended his team’s winning run in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

The Terras avoided a potential banana skin in their quest to make the play-offs this season, thanks to second-half goals from Jordan Copp and Ben Thomson, who continued his impressive run of scoring form.

Speaking about the game as a whole, Matthews, who admitted in the build-up to the game that he expected a difficult night’s work against the Robins, told Echosport: “On a difficult bumpy pitch, which is what you get at this stage of the season, against a stubborn side, to come away with a 2-0 result you could not really ask for much more.

“They were stubborn and had the usual cliché of two banks of four which was hard to break down. I knew it would be a tough game and they didn’t disappoint.

“We saw the game out very well, they huffed and puffed but didn’t really work me (in goal) too much. In the last five or 10 minutes I felt we saw it out quite comfortably.

“I thought it was a very good team performance and I felt everyone was around a seven or eight out of 10.”

The player-manager added: “We are starting to gain a little bit of momentum now.

“We have hit some form but a few other sides are hitting some form as well.

“Redditch and Leamington are in form, Hungerford are grinding out results and it’s going to be a really tight finish to the season.

“There are 10 games left and I would say that to be sure of getting in (the play-offs) we are going to need to average two points per game.”

n Portland United advanced to the last four of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup after they knocked out Bemerton Heath Harlequins at Grove Corner last night. Ross Carmichael and Lewis Whyton were on target in a 2-1 win for the Blues.

Bridport’s poor form in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division continued as they were beaten 4-1 at Barnstaple Town.
