BOSS Jason Matthews has revealed this evening that midfielder George Rigg has left the Terras.

The former Bristol City and Stoke City man, who joined as Matthews’ first permanent signing in January 2014, is set to agree a deal with Bath City, according to the Weymouth player-manager.

Speaking about Rigg’s exit, the Terras’ chief insisted it was a difficult decision for both parties to reach.

Matthews told Echosport: “I feel that George has been a fantastic servant to Weymouth Football Club. He goes with my blessing and I wish him all the best.

“George and I have travelled together for two-and-a-half years and he was my first permanent signing.

“The decision wasn’t taken lightly from both parties. From George’s point of view he needs to be a little bit closer to his Bristol home.

“It was a tough decision for him and an incredibly tough decision for me as well to let him go. We were close and had a good friendship off the field as well.”

He added: “George had a very close bond with a lot of the lads.

“I hope that we will meet up again in football, we certainly will off the pitch because I have grown a close friendship with George and his family.”

Rigg leaving the Bob Lucas Stadium does however give player-manager Matthews a portion of his playing budget to invest in fresh faces and he hinted that some deals are on the cards.

He added: “It frees up a wage and, in looking for certain transfer targets, it gives me a little bit of room to manoeuvre.

“I feel that we will have an influx of signings with current players and a couple of new ones in the coming weeks.”
