WEYMOUTH player-manager Jason Matthews was relieved to see his side beat Paulton Rovers in the FA Cup first qualifying round at the second attempt.

Rain thwarted the side’s first meeting on Saturday before goals from Aaron Rodriguez and Charlie Davis sealed the tie for the Terras in the rearranged fixture.

Assessing the game, Matthews told Echosport: “Over the course of the one-and-a-half games, I felt we could have scored more goals and as I said to the boys, we like to keep it on a knife’s edge.

“That’s a little disappointing and, for me, it keeps my heart in my mouth.

“But the boys saw it out well and overall we did a very professional job against a side that were set up to make it difficult for us.”

Rodriguez netted his first goal for the club in the victory, and his manager only had praise for him after the final whistle.

The boss added: “Rodders (Rodriguez) took his goal very well and I thought his overall performance was superb.”

Speaking about Weymouth’s other goalscorer, Davis, who also missed a spot-kick on the night, Matthews said: “I have no doubts in Charlie, I would back him to step up and score the next penalty.

“I felt it wasn’t a bad penalty, it was just a good save.”

After their triumph over Rovers, Weymouth face Vanarama National League South side Gosport Borough at home in the next round, something the manager is relishing.

He explained: “It’s a tough tie, but we’re at home.

“On our day we can beat anyone, and because we are the lower ranked side we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

“It will be a good spectacle for the FA Cup.”
