JASON Matthews saw his gamble to play two up front against Gosport in the FA Cup pay dividends and help book the Terras’ spot in the next round of the competition.

Looking for a solution with his side lacking goals of late, the Weymouth boss opted to bravely play two up front against a side a step above them in the footballing pyramid.

And the call to play with two frontmen proved the right one, as strike duo Ben Thomson and Stewart Yetton got their names on the scoresheet to help propel the Terras into the third round qualifying stage. Fellow sharpshooter Sam Jordan also came off the bench and impressed during the latter stages.

Speaking about the decision to go with two up front after the game, Matthews said: “It’s a nice feeling when you do something and it comes off.

“There was a lot of soul searching last week and sometimes it’s a tough job as a manager.

“I feel that I have three great strikers at the club and, from my point of view, they deserve for me to give them a chance and not bring someone in at the moment – even though we haven’t scored enough.

“On Saturday, they rewarded me.”

He added: “I said to the wingers to get crosses in the box, I would have like them to have missed the front man a little bit more than we did but, on the whole, we were playing with a little bit of confidence and belief.

“For me, it’s a huge win and we have three winnable games coming up now. We need to make sure we go and win them.”

Weymouth, who banked another £4,500 in prize money from the competition at the weekend, will learn what their next cup test will be in Monday's third qualifying round draw

“I hope that it is the springboard to kick us on now,” Matthews added.
