DEFENDER Calvin Brooks is backing Weymouth boss Jason Matthews to turn the club’s stuttering league campaign around.

The centre-half also insisted the entire Terras’ dressing room is determined work their way up the league table and put a positive run together in a bid to reach the play-offs this season.

Saturday’s defeat at home to Merthyr meant Matthews’ men have picked up just nine points from seven home league games so far – the fifth worst in the Evo-Stik Southern Division.

And with just five wins from 15 league fixtures overall, the Terras are only two points clear of the relegation zone and 15 adrift of their top-five target, although they do have games in hand on all but one team in the league.

Despite their current position, Brooks is adamant that the current Weymouth set-up is capable of delivering success this season.

He told Echosport: “All the lads are definitely behind Jase and the rest of the management team and I think we showed that in the second half on Saturday. We piled the pressure on Merthyr, kept going, but they defended well.

“Our overall performance wasn’t good enough but I think the fans would not be able to say we were not trying.

“We are all still pulling in the same direction, I know Jase is hell-bent on making the play-offs as well as all of the players.

“At the club of this size and this magnitude it’s so important that we make the play-offs really.

“I know there will be a lot of pressure on him (Matthews) but I know he is capable of dealing with it and all the lads are definitely behind him, 100 per cent.”

Asked about the current league position, Brooks replied: “To be 18th in the league isn’t exactly great is it? Everyone is disappointed with the result (on Saturday), everyone is disappointed with the performance but we’ve got everything in there to change it around.

“We have put ourselves in a position now where we need to put a run together.”
