CHAIRMAN Chris Pugsley has called for Terras’ boss Jason Matthews to “man up” but has “no inclination to sack him at all”.

Matthews, who has had a number of the club’s supporters calling for him to resign from the role of manager in recent weeks, saw his side get back to winning ways with a 4-0 win over Cirencester Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Monday.

That ended a frustrating run of five league draws for Weymouth, who are still languishing in 18th in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division, a whopping 19 points adrift of the play-off places – the target initially set for the club at the start of the campaign.

Despite the Terras’ dismal league position at present, Pugsley told Echosport that sacking Matthews is not in his mind.

He said: “I back him (Matthews) 100 per cent. Jase is probably more likely to walk than I am to sack him.

“I have got no inclination to sack him at all, nobody on the board has an inclination to sack him.

“The rest of the board are 100 per cent behind Jason as well.”

He added: “Jason needs to man up. He is a manager in the making, he’s not a manager yet.

“He is getting better but he does need to harden up and be his own man more. I have told him this and he knows this himself.

“He will be a good manager, I am sure of that.”

Commenting on the negativity surrounding the club’s progress on the field this term, chairman Pugsley insisted that all of those involved need to be united to make things work.

“No-one has been happy,” he said.

“The fans aren’t happy, I’m not happy, Jason’s not happy and the team is not happy.

“We are all unhappy together but we need to stick together more, as opposed to falling out with each other.

“We had almost 550 there on Monday and most of the teams in this league would take your arm off for that sort of crowd.”

He added: “Jason and I are talking every day of the week and we are probably more frustrated than the supporters. Jase is working on it seven days a week and I am with him on it.

“The supporters come for 90 minutes, and they deserve better than we are getting, but we are doing our best to make it happen.”

Asked whether the club have had to re-assess their ambitions for the campaign, Pugsley replied: “The play-offs are the only aim you can think about. We are not even considering just avoiding relegation.

“We are still looking to get up the table and keep our fingers crossed that we can still crawl into the play-offs. We are going to need to put a good run together, that’s for sure.

“The very worst case scenario is that Jason puts a very good run together and gets a really good squad together. Hopefully they would stay next year, be sensible, and we can kick on again.”
