TERRAS’ boss Jason Matthews has urged the club’s board to act quickly in appointing a new chairman and is waiting to be contacted on his future at the club.

The 42-year-old, who has been in charge since December 2013 following the sacking of Brendon King, admitted he was “massively sad” after chairman Chris Pugsley told Echosport he would be stepping down from the role at the end of this month.

Commenting on his future, manager Matthews said: “The chairman of the football club, whoever it may be, I need to have a good working relationship with. Otherwise that’s where it is going to fall down.

“Whoever it will be is obviously for the club to sort out in the coming weeks. All I would say is that I urge them to do it very quickly because plans need to be made for next season very fast now and you don’t want to be caught cold. Hopefully we can move on.”

Asked whether he felt his future as manager was insecure, the Terras’ boss replied: “It depends who the chairman is and whether they want me to continue.”

He claimed: “I was told at a board meeting at the beginning of March that I would be the manager next season but things have slightly changed since then.

“I will look forward to somebody contacting me and clarifying the situation.

“If it’s not to be I would leave with a very heavy heart but that’s for the new chairman to decide and we will see from there.”

Reacting to Pugsley’s decision to step down as chairman, Matthews added: “I am massively sad to see him go, obviously he has been a massive help in my three years and brought a lot to the table. His expertise will be sorely missed at Weymouth Football Club, to turn things around how he has in his tenure is a tremendous thing.

“We had a fantastic working relationship and I am sad to see him go.

“Chris has been a massive help and toughened me up as a manager. I thank him from the bottom of my heart.”

Quizzed on whether he had thought about resigning, Matthews said: “I don’t want to resign, we are on a nine-game unbeaten run at the moment.

“I know there is very little to play for but I want to finish the season strongly and that gives you the best possible chance of attracting some of the players that Weymouth Football Club demands.”
