WEYMOUTH captain Jake McCarthy said scoring two goals in the Terras’ 3-0 win over ten-man Dorchester in the Ridgeway derby was an “amazing feeling”.

The midfielder finished off two Josh Wakefield set-plays in the space of nine second-half minutes to establish a healthy margin of victory for his side at the Avenue Stadium.

Talking to Echosport after the match, McCarthy praised Wakefield’s quality ball in for his first goal.

He said: “The boys didn’t start the first 45 as quick as what we wanted to but we were 1-0 up going into the half-time break and we really came out into the second half firing on all cylinders and to grab two goals is an amazing feeling in the derby.

“The first goal was a great ball in from Josh Wakefield from a corner and I managed to get away from my man and head it back across where it was coming from and the keeper had no chance.

“The second one I just threw myself at it and managed to get a toe on it and poked towards the top right so I was pleased again.”

Manager Mark Molesley was unhappy with his side’s first-half showing but McCarthy felt his side showed “character” to get the win with an improved second-half display.

“From our point of view were disappointed after the first half, we knew we could play a lot better. Second half we came out and really showed that character that’s needed on derby day to get the result,” he said.

And McCarthy is now hoping the Terras can progress after securing a confidence-boosting win over their arch-rivals.

He said: “We’ve still got a lot more to bring to this league. We haven’t had a game where everything’s clicked yet.

“We’ve got a lot more to bring and the players know that, and so does everyone else, but as long as we keep on picking up the three points that’s all that matters.

“We’re hoping to kick on. Wherever we go, whether it’s at home, whether it’s away we just want to pick up the three points and do all that we can.

“If we’re playing badly and we still manage to get the three points then that’s even better, but we want to get the performances to a higher level if we can.”
