WEYMOUTH forward Brandon Goodship insisted it was “important” for him to take the last-minute penalty in the Terras’ 3-2 win over Basingstoke Town at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Having seen a spot-kick saved in Weymouth’s 2-0 defeat to Hereford on Saturday, Goodship erased that miss from the memory with the winning goal on Tuesday night.

But the striker admitted that getting three points was of greater significance with Weymouth having lost their previous match.

He told Echosport: “Saturday we weren’t at our best. We didn’t take anything away from the game and now we’ve got the three points, that’s obviously the main thing.

“On a personal level, of course it’s always nice to score and after missing the penalty on Saturday it was important for me going forward that I took this one and obviously scored it, so happy days for everyone.”

Goodship felt that, while the performance was not perfect, the Terras were “on top” of the Dragons for large spells of the match.

He said: “There were stages of the game and pieces of play that were a little bit sloppy on our behalf but overall we were on top of them for the majority of the game.

“It’s just about ironing out those mistakes, keeping them down to a minimum and seeing where that will take us, but we’re delighted to get the three points.”

The former Yeovil man also has his eyes on keeping level-headed before travelling to Chelmsford City in the FA Cup third qualifying round on Saturday.

“It’s a cliché in football but you don’t get too low with the lows and you don’t get too high with the highs and it’s exactly the same now.

“Whilst we’ll enjoy the feeling, Thursday we’ll be in preparing for Saturday and that’s the next big test away at Chelmsford,” he said.

“The boys are buzzing and it’s a much different scenario with the music blaring. We’re going to want that again on Saturday and as much as we can this season.

“So we’ll be looking forward to hopefully replicating that feeling and progressing in the cup.”

And Goodship is happy to be back on the goal trail having not scored as frequently as he would have liked this season.

He said: “I’ve not at all had as many as I’d have liked but hopefully fortunes will change now and they’ll start rolling in.

“You say you wait for a bus and two come along at once, hopefully that’s the case with my goalscoring situation. I’ll take each game as it comes and hopefully add some more to the tally.”
