WEYMOUTH assistant-manager Paul Maitland was pleased to see the Terras progress into the third round of the Big Free Bet.com Challenge Cup without overextending the squad.

A brilliant chip from the edge of the box by Pat Suraci in the 17th minute decided the tie at the Total Branding Community Stadium.

Maitland said: “On the whole it was a positive night, no fresh injuries, no bookings so it was good progress through without having to overextend ourselves too much.”

The result saw the Terras get back on track following a 3-0 defeat away to Slough at the weekend.

Maitland said: “First half we played some good football, created some good chances as well as the goal which was a goal worthy of winning any cup game.”

The Terras were without Harry Baker who was suspended after picking up a one-match suspension against Tiverton Town last week, while Ashley Wells, Calvin Brooks and Brandon Goodship remain injured.

Weymouth were a much-changed side for the encounter, with six changes being made and new signing James Hayter making his starting debut following a second-half appearance against Slough.

Maitland said: “We made a few changes, wanted to look at some different shapes and different personnel.

“We had a tough game on Saturday and we also needed to give some game time to some other players. We were also keen to look at the likes of Harry McGrath and Pat Suraci.”

However the Terras didn’t have it all their own way, as Maitland explained: “Second half Totton, as you’d expect, came at us with a bit more purpose and a bit more energy.

“They introduced two or three of their more recognised forward players to try and get something back out of it as we defended resolutely.”

Maitland was happy with the performance, saying: “There were lots of positives, there’s always things to work on things to improve on.”

The game saw a second half substitute appearance from River Smith, who plays for Hamble, but was cup tied for their match and so was allowed to be released play for Weymouth for the evening.

“We just wanted to take another look at him, obviously he has scored a lot of goals this season already and someone who scores goals is always going to create a bit of interest.”

The Terras are next in action at home in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division against Biggleswade Town.
