WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley was delighted to see his side put in a real shift to seal a 2-1 win despite a “freak accident” from goalkeeper Will Dennis that made for a tense end to the match.

An early goal from Thiago Caze Da Silva on his first start sent the Terras on their way to victory while a superb piece of control from Brandon Goodship doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, before Dennis accidentally put the ball into the back of his net from a Biggleswade corner.

Molesley said: “The way they went about their work I thought they all really put a shift in so I am delighted to get three points at a tough place.

“It was a real difficult afternoon with difficult conditions on a heavy draining pitch for the boys. I was really pleased with the mentality of the boys really.”

The Terras faced a spell of pressure late on after the own goal as the Waders hunted an equaliser with Robbie Parker shooting wide and Craig Daniel prompting a save from the Weymouth goalkeeper.

Molesley said: “It was backs against the wall a little bit, their tales were up and we had to weather it a little bit, but in the last 10 minutes the boys put in a real shift.

“I cannot remember them having any real clear-cut chances.

“We could never get out of sight, they were always in the game, there is always a danger then they are a dangerous opposition. It was a heavy difficult pitch.”

Discussing the own goal from Dennis, Molesley explained: “They had a shot on goal which Will tipped round and from the resulting corner unfortunately it was a bit of a freak accident, it was a nothing moment. Ninety-nine times out of 100 he just comes and catches or deals with it but unfortunately he sort of misjudged it and it ended up going in the goal.”

Harry Baker nearly scored immediately after he came on for his first appearance since suffering a head injury against Royston Town three weeks ago.

Molesley explained: “Harry Baker hit the post at 2-0 which could have put the game to bed I thought it was a great run from him, he was really unlucky that the keeper just got a touch on it.”

Molesley was happy with the defensive efforts in the second half as the Terras restricted the home side’s chances.

Molesley said: “In the second half I thought we nullified everything they threw at us, defensively we stood up really well.”

Weymouth scored early and late on in the first half to give themselves a good lead to take in with them at half time as Molesley explained: “It was obviously two good moments to score a goal right at the start and just before half time to give us that cushion.”

In particular Molesley was happy Caze Da Silva’s performance on his first start: “Thiago has come in at centre-half, our new signing, I thought he was fantastic. You can really see his desire and that showed with his goal.”

The Terras’ second goal also saw Goodship hit 30 goals for Weymouth which he did by putting the ball over the defender before lobbing Liam Gooch in the Waders’ goal.

Molesley said: “Brandon, instinctive as he is, the way he managed to somehow get that ball under control acrobatically and the touch for the finish was something to behold.”

Ultimately Molesley was happy with the work he got from his side, as he said: “Overall it was the work of the team, the hard work and the defence was solid throughout, it was a really good battling performance and that really pleases me.”
