WEYMOUTH manager Mark Molesley reflected on a ‘crazy season’ after he watched his side finish off their league campaign with a 3-0 win against Hitchin Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division and now face King’s Lynn Town in their play-off semi-final on Wednesday.

Second-half goals from Calvin Brooks, Abdulai Baggie and Brandon Goodship saw the Terras sign off their year at the Bob Lucas Stadium in style.

Molesley said: “It is a clean sheet, another three goals. It is 97 points and we have ended up finishing fifth, it has been a crazy season.”

He paid tribute to league champions Hereford, who finished 13 points clear at the top, as he said: “Hereford well done.

“They won it at a canter in the end and they had to because there were four teams chasing them hard and in any other year any one of those teams would have won the league comfortably.”

Referring to his own side’s performances, Molesley said: “To stay at the pace for a brand new team, a young team that is still learning and going to get better all of the time. I think we have done well to stay the course and give us that chance.”

Weymouth were held well in the first half, despite Josh Carmichael having a header cleared off the line from a corner 23 minutes in.

Molesley reflected: “In the first half we were a little bit frustrated at times, we could not quite get our stamp on the game. It was always going to be difficult, we had a big crowd and we wanted to put on a show.

“In the second half I thought we really played some good stuff and put them to the sword then the rain started to come down.

“I said to them in the changing room once it gets like that I wish it did not end because I want to stay out there and watch them because there was some fantastic bits of play out there.

“They are a great set of lads, some great players and they are a joy to watch when it gets like that.”

Weymouth played in front of a huge crowd with 1,102 people in attendance at the Bob Lucas Stadium, which was the biggest attendance in the league on the day.

When asked if this made their three well-taken goals extra special, Molesley said: “Definitely, you really want to put on a show for the fans because it is fantastic playing in front of them when they come out in their numbers like that and it is a great place to play football.

“You want to put on a performance and get them behind you so that they come back again, at the same time the boys probably cannot help but have Wednesday on their mind. We always take it one game at a time but Wednesday is a tough one for the players in terms of how to approach it.

“We will always take each game as it comes and we put everything into each game. I think the players clicked into gear a bit in the second half and it looked a bit more like us.”

Molesley said: “King’s Lynn are a great side, we will probably go into the tie as underdogs a little bit seeing as we finished a little bit lower and they have home advantage.

“But there is nothing between all of us so it is whoever turns up and performs on the day and our lads will certainly prepare right and work hard.”

Weymouth travel to Norfolk for the play-off semi on Wednesday (7.45pm).
