Yeovil talk to Beavon

YEOVIL Town have joined the race to sign Weymouth striker Stuart Beavon.

The 24-year-old has held preliminary talks with the Coca-Cola League One outfit and was in attendance at their 2-0 defeat against Leicester City at Huish Park on Monday.

It is understood the Glovers have been keeping tabs on Beavon for some time with assistant manager Steve Thompson being spotted at the Wessex Stadium back in September when the Terras held Crawley Town to a 2-2 draw.

Yeovil currently sit just one point above the drop-zone in the third-tier and despite having already signed ex-Port Vale striker Luke Rodgers this month, they are keen to add more firepower to their side which has only netted 23 times in 25 league outings so far this season.

Terras’ boss Alan Lewer said: “Stuart is a wanted man at the moment and he is talking to everybody to ensure the next move he makes is the right one for him and his career.

“Yeovil are one of loads of clubs who have shown an interest and last week their manager Russell Slade asked us to take him up on Monday to watch their game against Leicester City which we did.

“Russell then spoke to Stuart afterwards and they remain in talks at the moment and that is as far as it has gone at this stage.”

Beavon took his tally for the season to 11 last Saturday with a double in the 2-0 win at Kidder-minster Harriers and Lewer is not surprised that there is so much interest in him.

He added: “I have nothing but praise for the boy. When a person loses the weight he has and gets his fat content down it shows a real desire and work-rate.

“Going out on the grass every week and performing is his trade and he has worked his socks off, and because of that he deserves a career.

“He has always possessed the ability but now he also has that bit between his teeth and wants to move up the leagues, and I can only see him doing well in the future.”

If Beavon does move on this month, this afternoon’s Blue Square Premier clash with Northwich Victoria at the Wessex Stadium will prove to be his last home appearance for the Terras.

The talented forward has been a cult hero at the club ever since he arrived from Didcot Town in January 2007 and fans will no doubt be hoping that he stays at least until the end of the season when his current contract expires.

Other clubs being linked with Beavon include AFC Bournemouth, Torquay United, Oxford United, Rushden & Diamonds and Cambridge United.
