End the doom and gloom urges Kyle

DEFENDER Kyle Critchell is determined to help Weymouth shake off the doom and gloom tag it has been attached with over the past couple of years.

Despite attracting the interest of several clubs from a higher standard the former Wales Under-21 international opted for a move back to the Wessex Stadium this summer and he is looking forward to playing a huge role in the club’s resurgence.

The 22-year-old, who played for the Terras in 2007-08 and also enjoyed a loan spell at the Wessex Stadium at the end of last season, said: “Over the last year I have become frustrated with football and I just want to get back to enjoying the game again and that is why I have decided to come back to Weymouth.

“The manager spoke to me and he is very ambitious, and the fact that he wants me to be an integral part of his plans was enough for me to sign.

“Last season I got the call to come back on loan and help out, and I relished the opportunity and enjoyed it even though we ended up suffering relegation from the Blue Square Premier.”

Critchell produced some remarkable performances at the heart of the Terras’ defence in the final weeks of last season and it appears boss Matty Hale will utilise his services in that role in the Blue Square South.

Critchell added: “I have always wanted to play centre midfield or centre back, and the fact the manager wants me to be at the heart of his defence is very encouraging for me.

“I was quite young when I started playing League football and I kept being told that I was being played in wider positions to help me gain some experience, which in some ways is understandable, but hopefully now I can grow into the player that I should be.

“As I said my career to date has been frustrating. I seem to have one good year and then one bad one and it has not been a case of my own doing.

“I have been unlucky with injuries and they have all been down to other people injuring me or freak accidents in training rather than my own body.

“But this now is a fresh start and I hope I can help the club in its bid to rebuild.”

The Terras return to training tomorrow and Critchell is encouraged by the steps that have been made by the board since the end of last season.

He said: “It is important that Weymouth is never a doom and gloom club again. And since the end of last season there has been a lot of encouraging signs.

“Clearly there is still a lot to sort out off the field but if we can keep making positive steps then I am sure the fans will come back and start enjoying watching us play football again.

“A good structure is being put into place and most importantly the club is not paying stupid money anymore so the outlook is positive and I cannot wait to get back into it.”
