FORMER Bath City left-back Martin Slocombe has agreed to join Matty Hale’s rebuilding process at fellow Blue Square South side Weymouth.
The ex-Bristol City player joined several trialists and the rest of the Terras’ squad for the start of pre-season training last night and boss Hale is delighted that he has decided to come on board.
He said: “Martin was the left-back I said I was after at my first Press conference and it is fantastic news that he has agreed to sign.
“He has a great engine on him and he likes to get forward as well as defend. He has a fantastic left foot and is just the type of full-back I want. The other great thing is that he is still young and I am sure he will prove another very good asset for the club.”
Slocombe signed professional terms with the Robins in May 2007 but he failed to break into the first team and after his release a year later he agreed a one-year deal at Twerton Park.
The 20-year-old made 31 appearances for the Romans last season and he is expected to finalise his move to the Wessex Stadium by the end of the week.
Fellow new recruits Ryan Harrison, Scott Brice, Andy Harris, Dean Grubb, Hector Mackie, Dean Smith and Matt Thorne were also at training yesterday evening.
Hale, who has admitted that the Terras are likely to continue training in Weymouth rather than at Bath University where he works, added: “It was an encouraging first session. Most of the new signings were there and we also had several trialists.
“All the lads will continue to train together for the next couple of weeks and then we will begin to whittle them down a bit.
“We will take a look at a lot of them in our opening friendly at Bridport on July 11 and then take it from there.”
