FORMER Southend United defender David Obaze netted a late leveller on his debut as Weymouth captured a deserved draw at Maidenhead United last night.
The 6ft 5in tall centre-back fired home after being pushed up front in the dying stages after Staforde Palmer had given the Magpies the lead on 68 minutes – and it was the least the Terras deserved.
Following heavy defeats against Eastleigh and Bishop’s Stortford, a trip to York Road looked a tough assignment for Matty Hale’s men but they responded superbly.
The satisfied boss said: “On reflection we probably deserved all three points. They scored with just over 20 minutes to go and had it stayed like that it would have been harsh on us because the boys did everything we asked of them. We closed down throughout, were well organised and for much of the game we were in control.”
Obaze, 19, has signed non-contract terms along with ex-Swindon Town midfielder Chris Allen while Carl Preston and Ollie Barnes have both left the club by mutual consent.
Hale added: “David and Chris both came in and were excellent. It is not ideal to keep bringing players in all the time but I will keep doing it until we get things right.
“We have also terminated Carl’s contract and let Ollie Barnes go to free up some space so we can strengthen in certain areas and we might see more of that as well.”
Striker Jake Reid and keeper Ryan Harrison also earned special praise from Hale, who said: “Jake won everything in the air and worked his socks off while Ryan made a couple of fantastic saves.”
