WEYMOUTH have narrowly missed out on capturing an ex-Premier League star, after Wrexham won the race to sign Frank Sinclair.
Terras’ boss Matty Hale was keen to bring the former Chelsea and Leicester City defender to the Wessex Stadium but the 37-year-old instead opted for Blue Square Premier outfit Wrexham.
Hale though, understands why the ex-Jamaican international chose North Wales over South Dorset.
He said: “Frank was given a chance to play a league higher than us so it was more than likely that he would take it.
“We had discussions with him and he seemed interested but Wrexham is a good move for him as they’re looking for a return to the Football League.
“Bringing Frank in was something we were interested in doing but unfortunately it hasn’t materialised.”
Hale remains on the lookout for new faces, and has space in his squad following the release of Matt Thorne.
The midfielder only joined the Terras at the start of June but has now moved on and signed for Toolstation Western Premier Division side Bristol Manor Farm.
The Weymouth manager added: “Matt’s contract has been cancelled by mutual consent. We were looking to loan him out but he’s found himself a club close to where he lives and the situation works out for both parties.
“He’ll be able to get some games, while we have freed up some money in the budget. I’ll still be keeping an eye on Matt though.”
The Terras were back in training last night for the first time since Saturday’s opening win of the Blue Square campaign – a 2-1 victory over Worcester City.
Striker Joe Arnold was expected to return from injury and ease his way back to full fitness.
Hale said: “He’s keen to play and he would give us another option for Friday and Monday’s games but we need to make sure we don’t bring him back too soon.”
Any possible loan move for Torquay United forward Ben Joyce could hinge on Arnold’s return to fitness, while injuries at Rushden & Diam-onds appear to have halted the progress of another potential loan signing – that of midfielder Jake Beecroft.
Weymouth visit Weston-super-Mare on Friday night before entertaining Havant & Waterlooville on Monday.
n Weymouth Supporters’ Travel Club is running a coach to the Blue Square South game at Weston-super-Mare on Friday. The coach will leave the Wessex Stadium at 3.45pm and the cost will be £12. To book a seat telephone Ian White on 836361.
