WEYMOUTH’S players were paid for the first time in six weeks, immediately following their impressive goal-less draw with high-flying Woking at the Wessex Stadium last night.
The Terras held on for a much-needed point and could have made it all three, but Jordan Rose was denied by a clearance on the line after rounding Woking stopper Ross Worner in the last minute.
Steve Beasant, advisor to Chris Ryan’s consortium, confirmed after the game that Ryan would pay the players and staff working at last night’s game directly out of his own pocket for the time they put in, something which pleased Hutchinson.
The Terras’ boss said: “Chris Ryan and Steve Beasant came in and said the boys will be paid immediately after the game, certainly a bit towards what they are owed. We thank them for that and I’m sure that gave the boys a bit more hope.
“It looks very positive with Chris and Steve – they are certainly focused on the job and what they want to do.”
Ryan and Beasant witnessed the draw with the Cards from the stand as their take-over nears completion, and were part of a 544 crowd that nearly erupted when Rose looked set to score before Tony Sinclair’s 90th minute goal-line clearance.
“We’ve taken one of the best sides in the league all the way and could have nicked it,” added Hutchinson. “How the lad cleared that one off the line, I do not know.
“We kept a clean sheet and the boys’ attitude and determination was great and what I expected of them.
“Another plus is I don’t think we played very well and came away with a draw, which is another step in the right direction.
“We just lacked that little bit of quality from a Chris Allen or a Kyle Critchell type of player, if I’m going to be picky.
“But it’s nice to stand here, say we haven’t played well and yet come away with a point against one of the top sides.”
With captain Critchell suspended and Allen suffering from flu, Hutchinson was forced to play loan signing Jamie McGuinness in central midfield on his home debut.
“Jamie has never played in central midfield in his life and we’ve thrown him in at the deep end.
“He found it tough but that shows what he is all about – he didn’t moan, got in there and did a job.”
Next up for Weymouth is Saturday's FA Trophy derby with rivals Dorchester at the Wessex Stadium.
