THE Wessex Stadium’s gates could close for the very last time following this afternoon’s match bet-ween Weymouth and Welling United (3pm), if the Terras’ proposed Company Voluntary Arr-angement (CVA) is not accepted by creditors on March 26.
Chairman George Rolls has urged fans not to miss out on what could be their last chance to say goodbye to the stadium that has hosted all of Weymouth’s ups and downs since 1987.
The Terras are not due at home again until their scheduled Blue Square South match with Thurrock on March 27 – one day after the club’s creditors decide the future of the business.
“We would love to get the fans to the ground on Saturday because, potentially, it is the last time football could be played at the Wessex Stadium,” said chairman George Rolls. “If the club is forced into liquidation then there is no given right that football can be played at the Wessex.
“I’m hoping the fans will turn out on Saturday and get behind the players left there because, unfortunately, it could be the last time.”
Although Scott Brice, Josh Llewellyn, Jake Reid, Matt Groves, Martin Slocombe, Jordan Rose and Luke Benbow have all left the Terras this week, a decent squad, which will include the return of Cambridge United loanee Ben Farrell, will host Welling this afternoon.
Cameron Mawer, man of the match against Newport County, has agreed to take a 50 per cent pay cut until the end of the season, despite having to travel from London for each game, so will line up at the heart of the defence.
South Korean trialist Cheoul Min-Kim is also available, but football is the least of the Terras’ worries.
“We have to see what happens on March 26 anyway because if the CVA is not approved, I’m not sure there will be a Weymouth FC in it’s same guise,” added Rolls. “There’s a lot to look at and think about over the next few weeks but there is still a squad there capable of going out and getting a result.”
Player-assistant Andy Harris will take caretaker charge of the team for the second time this season and will be assisted by reserve boss Dave Kiteley but, even after several high-profile departures, Harris has backed the players left to do the business against Welling.
“What’s happened has happened, we’ve got a game to play today,” he said. “The lads who are coming in have got different reasons why they are playing.
“Maybe it’s to win a contract elsewhere or cement their place in the Weymouth first team, but everyone has got their motives for performing.”
