ANDY Harris will not become the next manager of Weymouth FC if asked by chairman George Rolls but still hopes to have a big future at the Terras.

The 33-year-old former Liverpool and Southend United player took caretaker charge of Weymouth’s 3-0 loss to Welling United on Saturday, and also played 90 minutes in central defence.

He was quick to praise the young reserves who made the giant step up to the Blue Square South, but will not be taking over the reins full-time in the near future.

“I just want to play and management might be something for me in the future and I would like to step into management but I don’t think the club is in a situation where I would want to take the job,” he said, but added that he would like to continue playing in claret and blue.

“I’m a local lad, I want to play for as long as I can and I don’t see myself travelling too far to go and play football,” commented Harris. “Hopefully the club will still be about in the next few weeks and years, and I would certainly like to play my part.”

Of his side’s 3-0 loss to Welling, he added: “The lads were exceptional and a little bit of fitness just told at the end.

“We haven’t trained properly for the last couple of weeks and the lads have come out of the Dorset Premier League side – it’s a big step up to the Conference South.

“But to a man – and they were men – they have done me proud and the football club proud.

“I’m just disappointed at the situation where they have had to be thrown in at the deep end.

“But they have been striving in the reserve team to get in the first team and this was their opportunity to show what they can do and I think they have gone out there and performed so all of them can hold their heads up high.

“When times are hard and money is scarce, these lads need to be the lifeblood of the club.

“Jamie Frampton and Ollie Tribe were unbelievable.”
