STEPHEN Reed believes removing Brendon King from the Terras’ hot-seat would be a huge mistake.

The 26-year-old is in his third spell at the Bob Lucas Stadium and is adamant the current boss has what it takes to deliver the stability the club needs.

Speaking to Echosport, Reed said: “Some people say Brendon is punching above his weight but the man needs to get experience at this level.

“To get rid of him now would be a huge mistake, and it would completely upset the whole ship.

“This club desperately needs a couple of years of stability and getting a new manager in every season is not going to do that.

“The amount of managers and players that have gone through this club over the last few years has been ridiculous and that needs to stop.

“Instead the board should say to Brendon, ‘you’ve got the job for the next couple of years no matter what, now let’s have a look at how we can take things forward’.

“At the end of the day a manager is only as good as the players at his disposal and in terms of that I think Brendon has done a good job.”

Reed went on to say: “This season has been a bit of a rollercoaster.

“We had a good run in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy, even though we eventually got found out by Alfreton Town, and at times we picked up some great results in the league but as soon as we lost the likes of Sam Malsom and a few injuries took hold, it exposed the lack of depth and experience in the squad.

“There are a lot of young lads here that are still very inexperienced and Brendon has done superbly to have got so much out of them.

“The way he has brought on the likes of Sam Poole, Ashley Wells and Mark Ford has just been fantastic and if the club can now keep the bulk of the squad together and add a couple more experienced heads then I am convinced we could be a top-10 team next season.

“The whole place also needs to become a lot more professional. A lot of people have questioned the coaching but that isn’t the problem.

“When everyone is there it is okay but that is not always the case due to university commitments and things like that.

“That needs to change because when you drive two hours like I do and turn up and see just 10 people at training it can be a bit soul destroying and extremely frustrating.

“We also need things like proper tracksuits and some decent equipment.

“With everyone turning up in different training kit, we look more like a football team from the Dog & Duck than one from a semi-professional club, and believe me things like that can make a huge difference.”

Reed’s commitment has often been questioned in the past but this season he has clearly gone some way to answering his critics.

Not only has he made more first-team appearances (53) than any other player this season and also provided the most assists (9) but he also recently lost his full-time job when he played in the recent home game against Chesham United instead of turning up on time for a night shift.

Whether he will remain a Terra next season though is still unclear.

Dorchester Town attempted to sign the midfielder back in January but he turned them down and he has also been linked more recently with a move to Kettering Town.

When asked about his plans, Reed said: “Things at Weymouth are clearly in limbo. We still don’t know who the manager is going to be next season and until that is decided all I can do is wait and see.

“As for Kettering Town, I am not interested and I will not be going there.”

Sunday meeting

THE interim board at Weymouth FC looks set to outline its plans for next season at the end of this week.

With question marks still hanging over the future of management duo Brendon King and Matt Groves, chairman Nigel Biddlecombe has issued the following statement: “The board is discussing all aspects of the club including the managerial and playing side and will issue a full statement following the board meeting to be held next Sunday morning (May 6).”
