Dorchester & District Amateur Boxing Club bagged a double at the Shepton Mallet Tournament, courtesy of Sol Gilday-Evans and Joe Malpas.

The latter was first to enter the ring, elected to confront Jack Scadden from Priorswood ABC.

The Somerset fighter enjoyed huge support from the crowd but both boxers started brightly, showing startling hand speed with unrelenting counters and combinations.

Malpas soon sussed his southpaw opponent and caught him with some crafty heavy rights to the jaw, which resulted in Scadden being the first to hit the canvas.

A large number of punches rained down from both boxers but the more accurate and powerful shots came from the county town ace.

Scadden fell twice more in the second round and was ultimately stopped by the referee, resulting Malpas having his hand raised in victory.

The winner said: “It certainly wasn’t all one-way. I had to work hard to avoid Jack’s ferocious and awkward left-handed style but the noise from the spectators gave me an endless supply of gas.

“I absorbed a lot of punches, but I wanted the win.”

Stable-mate Gilday-Evans was up against Eddie Turner from Chard.

From the opening bell, Turner made it obvious that his intentions were to dispatch the county town boxer with a big punch.

But Gilday-Evans used his fast footwork and reactions to frustrate his opponent, who was unable to catch his prey with a meaningful shot.

Turner tried his best to turn the bout his way but Gilday-Evans always produced the better work and rocked his rival in the second.

The Dorchester member remained on top and with Turner unable to land the telling blow he was after, Gilday-Evans triumphed on points.

Club coach Ben Geyser said: “Joe’s a brave, impressive boxer with a big heart and he’s done the club proud.

“Sol showed himself to be tactically-adept as both boxers encountered exchanges with some ferocity.

“Their enthusiasm and skill set the pace that was felt and heard around the Leisure Centre.”
