COLFOX Girls have been crowned champions after beating IPACA and Wey Valley in an area tournament hosted by the West Dorset school.

The Year Eight girls, Amy Lambert, Emily Courtice, Maisie Kitton and Ella Kershaw, won the tournament to build on their bronze medal won at the Dorset games last year.

Their first clash against Wey Valley required all of the girls to raise their game which they did convincingly, winning the first set 21-9.

All four demonstrated impressive defensive skills and were not intimidated by their opposition made up of Year Nine students.

They won the second set 21-12.

Immediately after this success, the girls faced IPACA.

Again they started strongly with some impressive service reception followed by good setting and attacking spikes.

Their consistency enabled them to win the first set 21-13.

IPACA came back strongly in the second set, keeping the score level for a considerable time.

Eventually, the consistent team work enabled them to build up a lead and go on to win the set 21-15 to become champions.

They now qualify for the Dorset Tournament, which is to be held in the indoor beach facilities at the Leaf Academy in Bourne-mouth on March 28.

The boys' team started strongly in their first game against Wey Valley and almost caused the first upset of the day.

At one stage, they were leading by three points after some impressive three-touch volleyball culminating with George Wyrill spiking through the middle.

The strength and power of the older opposition eventually showed through and the boys lost their first game 21-12.

Throughout the rest of the tournament the boys’ team consistently played well and were not intimidated by their older opposition.

Their strongest game they saved until their final contest when they narrowly lost to Wey Valley II by 21-19 points.

The winners of the boys’ tournament were the very dominant IPACA team who convincingly won all of their matches and will now go on to compete in the Dorset tournament at the Leaf Academy.

The tournament was officiated by Colfox’s Year Nine GCSE PE students.

A school spokesman said: “They are an impressive group of young people, who very confidently and maturely refereed, scored and collated the results for the tournament.
