Under-18 Division One

PORTLAND TOWN 1

WESTLAND SPORTS 4

TITLE contenders Westland Sports proved too strong for Portland Town at Grove Corner.

Portland battled valiantly against the visitors, second in Dorset League Division One, but couldn’t respond after going 3-0 down.

Sports were fortunate to take the lead in the ninth minute, with the atrocious conditions playing their part in the goal.

Matty Peart could do nothing to stop a swirling corner sailing into the roof of the net.

Town competed well but just when it looked like Sports were going to go into the second half with a slender advantage they doubled their lead.

A Town midfielder lost the ball, leaving the defence exposed, and a Sports forward picked his spot from the edge of the box.

The hosts struggled to match their opponents in the second half as Sports coped better with the conditions.

Sports soon went 3-0 up when their winger beat Peart to the ball before squaring for a tap in.

Town continued to battle on and deservedly claimed a consolation goal when a Matt Dunlop free-kick from distance took a slight deflection and left the visiting keeper helpless.

However, Sports had the last word, breaking away to kill the game off with a fourth.

Town now travel to Parley next Sunday to face a side that drew 1-1 with Corfe Mullen United Juniors at the weekend.
