WEYMOUTH’S young cricketers got the chance to showcase their skills at the club’s family fun day at Redlands.

Taking on a wide variety of training drills, the young Seasiders also got their parents and grandparents involved with the training, and played soft ball matches later in the day.

With the club’s youth section having finished their games for the outdoor season and secured a new sponsorship deal with local builders’ merchants Buildrite, chief youth coach Hugh Lawes was delighted with the way the day capped their successful campaign.

Speaking about the event, he told Echosport: “It was fantastic, there was about 80 people there. All of the parents and the grandparents joined in and fun was had by all.

“We had parents getting coached to bowl and bat so they could play the games later on and the children had their skills tested by bowling into certain areas.

“We also had a mixture of the first team players there and the whole club got involved.

“It was the first time we have ever done it and it was that successful and enjoyable we will definitely be doing it again next year.”

Lawes also took the time to thank the youngsters’ parents for their help and support throughout the season.

He added: “Without the parents’ support there would be no children coming to matches.

“The parents know that we run things well here and that makes them happy to bring their kids along to the matches and the training, for that we thank them.”
