CORNWALL U18 1 DORSET U18 2

DESPITE several late withdrawals leaving the team without any substitutes to call on, Dorset produced their best display of the season to knock Cornwall out of the Mick Parry Memorial Trophy at AFC Newquay.

Dorset manager Jamie Murray had to reshuffle his back four due to a lack of defenders in the squad and played midfielder Sam Pashen at sweeper alongside debutant Jack Miller at centre-back and goalkeeper Taylor Hibbs at left-back.

The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges without threatening Matt Downes in the Dorset goal.

As the first half progressed Dorset gained more possession and captain Sammy Glatzel struck the bar following good work by the lively Dan Quirke.

The visitors deservedly took the lead just after the half hour when Glatzel strode through the midfield before placing a shot past James Wignall in the home goal.

Eight minutes later, Harry Ahearn put the hosts on level terms.

Into the second half and Dorset’s Jonah Ayunga was unlucky when his header struck a post after industrious play on the right from Reece De-Carteret and Ben Wellman.

However, De-Carteret’s luck ran out shortly after when he received a second yellow card to leave Dorset with 10 men.

But this only seemed to galvanise the visitors and, five minutes later, a neat pass from Ayunga found Quirke and he slotted home to make it 2-1.

Both teams had chances in the remaining 10 minutes but Dorset hung on to clinch a spot in the semi-finals.
