KELLY Coombes has been selected for the Great Britain Under-19 team.

The 17-year-old from Sherborne, who captains Yeovil College, gained her place in the side after taking part in national trials.

Former Gryphon School student Coombes said: “When my number was called out I didn’t take it in at first.

“My friend had to nudge me before I realised they meant me.

“I’m really excited and so are my family and the college team.

“I’m so happy that my coach, Kathy Potts, and the team are really supportive.

“The girls were all over social media afterwards saying well done and I don’t think I’d have got as far as I have without Kathy – she makes sure she pushes me.”

College lecturer and team coach Potts added: “We’re all delighted for Kelly.

“Not only is she a natural athlete and a versatile netballer, she is a mainstay of the college team.

“As captain, she always demonstrates a positive attitude and encourages others with her enthusiastic approach.

“She inspires a great team spirit and we’re all really proud of her and her achievements.”

The Sport & Exercise Science student will now join the British team for training and matches.
