A TOTAL of 49 Weymouth Swimming Club members qualified for this year’s Dorset County Development ASA competition at the Littledown Centre in Bournemouth.

And they excelled in the pool, bringing home a massive haul of medals from the event.

Some swimmers had to deal with a challenging 12 qualifying swims over two gruelling days against competitors representing clubs from all over Dorset.

In order to rise to the challenge, Weymouth members had to swim faster than they ever had, and they recorded a total of 89 personal bests between them over the duration of the competition.

The club achieved outstanding results and claimed a total of 45 medals, including 12 gold, 21 silver and 12 bronze.

To round off each day’s events, the fastest backstroke and freestyle swimmers raced in an exciting knockout event.

The youngsters tested their speed and endurance as one swimmer was knocked out every 50m.

Aidan Watson and Nial Turner qualified in the backstroke on day one, while Alice Adams (backstroke), Aidan Turner (freestyle) and Nial Turner (freestyle) did so on day two.

Club coach Andy Hawkins supported the swimmers over the two days, organising the competitors while cheering and motivating the swimmers to bring out their talents.

He was extremely proud and encouraged by the performance of the Weymouth Swimming Club squad, who showed just how much can be accomplished by a relatively small but hardworking club.
