DORCHESTER Town's Ability Counts side rose to the top of the league after playing four games over two days, writes Alfie Lumb.

The side were nine points adrift of rivals Wimborne Town before they travelled to Poole to play Dexter Sports.

The hosts grabbed an early lead with a long-range strike catching the Dorchester defenders offguard but the Magpies hit back when Jack Harrison tucked the ball in from a corner.

Dexters struck again but two close-range saves from goalkeeper Alfie Lumb and an goal-line clearance from Dan Williamson spurred the Magpies on, with captain Brendan Butcher scoring twice in quick succession giving Dorchester a lead.

However, Dexters got back into the game again when their striker found himself through on goal making the game tied at 3-3 on half-time. Dorchester started to display their dominance early in the second half when Williamson latched on to a pass from Brendan Butcher.

Butcher got his third and fourth goal with Dexter scoring a consolation in between.

The Magpies winning 6-4.

Coach and Dorchester first-team defender Jason Brookes said that the Magpies showed a strong team mentality and looked strong at the back despite the goals against them.

The second game saw Dexters take an early two-goal lead, which was halved by Butcher before the break.

The captain got another four goals and then turned provider for Jamie Bown, who fired the ball into the top corner leaving the Dexter's keeper rooted to the spot.

Dexter seized the opportunity to score another though it was too little too late, with the final score being 6-3 to the visitors.

This run narrowed Wimborne Town's lead to just three points though Dorchester knew they would need to beat rivals Weymouth Cougars by four goals if they were to top the table on goal difference.

Weymouth started stronger than their hosts with captain Liam Thorne forcing Dan Williamson to make some crucial saves.

Butcher eased the tension scoring the first goal. Alfie Lumb forced a second just before half-time, tapping the ball in from close range following a deflected shot from Danny Kiy.

Butcher added another goal to his tally before Bown finished proceedings firing a shot from range.

The teams then played again though there were no real chances from either side, with Weymouth's Clive Thorne and Dorchester's Williamson denying both sides a goal, with the final score being 0-0.

This draw moved the Magpies to top of the league by one point.

Dorchester are waiting to see whether this unbeaten run has led to the teams third Ability Counts title in their four-year history as a club.

The Dorchester Town's Durdle Door team jumped to first in their league following a 1-0 win over Dexter Sports and a 3-2 win over Poole Town.

They need just a draw against Wimborne Town's Durdle Door team if they are to secure the title.
