THE Saturday Sports Club at Conifers School brought the curtain down on this year’s programme by crowning its Merit Trophy winners.
For the past eight weeks, dozens of children have been taking part in the initiative and experiencing a wide range of sports which have included football, tag rugby, mini-cricket, hockey and mini-tennis.
There have been some fantastic performances throughout the sessions with several children picking up Merit Trophies for their tremendous effort, positive attitude and application.
There were also two special awards for the top-two all-rounders with Cilian McKinty picking up the accolade for the boys and Ellen Seagan for the girls. Both McKinty and Seagan were presented with their prizes not only for their commitment but also for being positive role models. Every child that took part also obtained a certificate and medal to celebrate their attendance at the club, which has now been running for over 20 years.
Organiser Don Whistance said: “A big thank you goes to all the coaches who have helped over the eight weeks, in particular Julien Laws, who coached the tennis, Des Quick, who coached the rugby, and Mick Kerlew, who coached the football.
“Hopefully, the children will now continue with their sporting education by joining the clubs available in the local community.”
